Ithai is our newest recipient. He is a 3 year old from Malawi, Africa. Shortly after he was born, he developed an infection in both legs which quickly turned to gangrene. To to save Ithai’s life, both legs had to be amputated, making him a bilateral amputee. His mom, Ellen, feared he would live a life in isolation as he would not be able to attend school to get an education. She applied to many foundations and received one rejection after another until she reached out to The Born to Run Foundation. While competing on the reality T.V. show, Survivor in 2002, our founder, Noelle Lambert, connected with Season 43 winner, Mike Gabler. He pledged to donate his $1 million dollar prize to charity, and when he found out she helped limb different children receive prosthetics, he donated the funds to help Ithai. Ithai is now attending preschool where he has made many new friends. His mom said she hopes someday, Ithai will be able to participate in the Paralympic games, representing his country of Malawi. We will be rooting for Ithai to do just that!
